World War II - A Schoolboy's Story

This is written for my grandchildren who wanted to know about my experiences as little boy when we in England had a war with Germany.

The war lasted from 1939 when I was six to 1945 when I was twelve. Although it was a very long time ago I have very clear memories of the German bombing.

I lived in a City called Coventry, with my Mum and Dad, and my older brother Tony, and my older sister Margaret. Coventry was an industrial city, and its factories made warplanes, tanks, guns, bombs and shells for us to use in the war against the Germans, so the Germans had to try and destroy our factories. There are many many good Germans, but during the war their leader was a very nasty man called Adolf Hitler.

The bombing started in 1940, when I was seven. Everyone in Coventry had prepared to defend themselves against the bombing. If the windows of your house were suddenly smashed by a bomb blast, you could be very badly cut by flying broken glass, so everyone covered their windows with sticky tape. This will prevent too much broken glass flying around.
